NTAHANGWA, April 21 (ABP) – The First Lady of Burundi, Angeline Ndayishimiye, returned to the country on Sunday, April 19, 2026, after a stay in Libre ville, in the Gabonese Republic. She took part in activities marking the national launch of the campaign “Strengthening the Resilience of Women and Girls in the Face of Climate Change.”
In an interview given to the press upon her arrival at Melchior Ndadaye Airport, Mrs. Angeline Ndayishimiye indicated that this event was led by the Organization of African First Ladies for Development (OAFLAD).
She added that this meeting was held on the sidelines of International Women’s Day and aimed to increase the capacity of African women and young girls to face the combined effects of climate disruptions, security crises, and socio-economic vulnerabilities.
On the sidelines of this campaign, she continued, discussions focused on national and regional resilience strategies, in a context marked by the increase in natural disasters and tensions on the continent.
She also highlighted major challenges for African states, notably the increased vulnerability of women, challenges related to access to healthcare, the prevention of gender-based violence (GBV), as well as economic inclusion, she illustrated.
Expressing her gratitude following the United Nations Population Award (2026 edition, institutional category), awarded to the “Bonne Action Umugiraneza” foundation of which she is the chairperson, Angeline Ndayishimiye welcomed the congratulations addressed by all partners and the Burundian people. She emphasized that this recognition is the result of the support and contribution of everyone to the success of the foundation’s actions.
