BUJUMBURA, Feb 17 (ABP) – The President of the Republic of Burundi, Evariste Ndayishimiye, returned home on Monday, February 16, 2026, after participating in the 39th ordinary session of the Conference of Heads of State and government of the African Union (AU). At the end of this summit, the organization entrusted him with the rotating presidency.
Upon his arrival at International Airport Melchior Ndadaye, the Head of State first thanked God for this opportunity. He then emphasized that this distinction is an honor not only for him, but also for the entire Burundian people. Furthermore, he indicated that the discussions held in Addis Abeba focused on several priorities, notably strengthening economic sovereignty and consolidating regional peace in order to assist countries facing instability.
Moreover, the President recalled that the theme of the year 2026 focuses on promoting sustainable access to drinking water as well as reliable hygiene and sanitation services, in line with continental development goals. In the same spirit, he warmly thanked the Heads of State of AU member countries for the trust placed in Burundi. He also commended those who advocated for the country, considering that it meets the requirements to represent Africa on the international stage.
According to him, Burundi intends to work actively toward cohesion among member states in order to build an organization composed of united nations living in peace and security. Thus, the planned actions will be in continuity with the programs already established by the AU, particularly with regard to the continent’s long-term development outlook. He stressed the need to accelerate the implementation of the African continental free trade area (AfCFTA), considered an essential lever for boosting intra-African trade. At the same time, Burundi plans to mobilize more investors in key development sectors and calls on all citizens to contribute to achieving the national vision 2040-2060.
President Ndayishimiye also praised the achievements of his predecessor, Joao Lourenco, President of Angola, for the progress made during his term at the head of the AU. He assured that Burundi will continue these achievements while contributing its own efforts to promote cooperation and strengthen good governance on the continent.
Finally, following the announcement of the AU champion’s return, many citizens gathered at various intersections across the country, notably near the airport, at the Rond-point Chanic and at the Cotebu market roundabout, to celebrate the event with songs and congratulatory messages. President Ndayishimiye thus becomes the 24th leader to assume, for one year, the presidency of the pan-African organization.
