BUJUMBURA, April 24th (ABP) – The Mirango neighborhood in the Kamenge urban zone is facing serious challenges in household waste disposal. Residents report that garbage collection trucks have not passed through the area for over two months.

Based on ABP’s on-site assessments of some streets in Mirango, it was noted that waste overflows from bags and piled against the walls of many residential compounds, emitting foul odors. Residents interviewed revealed that it has been more than two months since the last garbage truck came through the neighborhood.

“Fortunately, we no longer pay a monthly fee,” said one resident, noting that each household pays 3,000 BIF or more when the truck arrives, depending on the amount of waste being collected.

Despite this, residents of Mirango are calling for the implementation of effective waste collection policies to solve a problem that could harm their health.

When asked about the issue, deputy-chief of this neighborhood Charles Nduwumwe confirmed that the local administration is aware of the situation. He added that the waste management services have been contacted and have promised to intervene as soon as possible, despite the ongoing fuel shortage.

He also reminded the public that penalties are in place for individuals who dispose of household waste in unauthorized locations.
