Provisional results of the July 23, 2025 senate elections announced

MUGERE, July 28 (ABP) – The Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI) announced on Friday, July 25, 2025, the provisional results of the senatorial elections held on July 23, 2025. The election took place in a calm atmosphere with an exceptional turnout of 99.91%, according to CENI chairman Prosper Ntahorwamiye. He stated that out of 1,054 expected voters, 1,053 cast their votes. The only exception concerns the province of Buhumuza, where one electoral file is currently under judicial review.

Among the parties in the race were CNDD-FDD, CNL, UPRONA, and APDR. The CNDD-FDD emerged as the clear winner, securing 100% of the available seats. Ntahontuye highlighted that the CNDD-FDD, CNL, and UPRONA parties were present in all five provinces of the country, while the APDR party participated only in the Bujumbura province.

Ntahontuye indicated that in Buhumuza province, the Electoral College consisted of 175 members, with 174 voters and a participation rate of 99.42%. In Bujumbura province, the Electoral College had 277 members, all of whom voted, resulting in a 100% participation rate. In Burunga province, the Electoral College had 176 members, all of whom voted, with a 100% turnout. In Butanyerera province, the Electoral College consisted of 201 members, all of whom participated, also resulting in 100% turnout. In Gitega province, the Electoral College had 225 members, all of whom voted, achieving a 100% participation rate.

Summarizing the national results, the CENI chairman stated that the CNDD-FDD party obtained 99.72% on the Hutu list and 99.62% on the Tutsi list. UPRONA obtained 0% on both the Hutu and Tutsi lists. CNL secured 0.09% on both the Hutu and Tutsi lists, while APDR received 0% on both lists.

Ntahontuye then listed the names of the CNDD-FDD senators, presented in pairs by province.

In Buhumuza province: Sabine Ntakarutimana and Nshimirimana Cyriaque. In Bujumbura province: Gervais Ndirakobuca and Leocadie Ndacayisaba. In Burunga province: Reverien Ndikuriyo and Clotilde Kampimbare. In Butanyerera province: Joséphine Nyiraneza and Berchmas Nzoyihaya. In Gitega province: Generose Ngendanganya and Ferdinand Ndacayisavye.

Ntahorwamiye also announced that Imelde Sabushimike, Jean Baptiste Baranyizigiye, and Léonard Habimana are the three co-opted senators from the Twa ethnic group.

It is worth noting that after the co-optation of the Twa ethnic group, the new Senate of the Republic of Burundi for the 2025/2030 legislature comprises 13 senators.
