MUHANGA, Jan 11 (ABP) – Operators of 18 developed marshes in Muhanga commune of Butanyerera province are facing an acute shortage of latrines.
Indeed, none of these marshes has toilets, and even the pits that had been dug are now unusable due to the lack of construction. This was stated by Firmin Nahimana, in charge of monitoring activities in developed marshes through various government projects.
He says that none of these marshes has a single sanitation block, forcing users to relieve themselves in the open. He specifies that although a project to dig pits was initiated in some places, no building has been erected there to date.
For this reason, he calls on the communal authorities to get involved in solving this problem, with the aim of improving hygiene and facilitating farmers’ working conditions.
In response, the communal administrator of Muhanga, Ms. Annonciate Nizigiyimana, recalls that administrative authorities have the mission of protecting the health and well-being of the population. Thus, she asks the head of the communal health department to inventory the needs of each marsh so that the construction of latrines can be carried out as soon as possible through community works.
As for Matongo commune, its administrator, Ms. Janvière Kanyana, warns households without latrines that they will soon be fined, especially since the deadline that had been granted to them to build them has already expired.
