GITEGA, April 24 (ABP) – The Burundian Head of State, Evariste Ndayishimiye, called on Burundians to change their mindset regarding the organization of elect ions. This message was delivered on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, in Gitega, during the official launch of the electoral education campaign for the 2027 presidential election.
For President Ndayishimiye, the expenses related to elections are colossal. Consequently, it is necessary to adjust course by minimizing them. This reaction follows that of the chairperson of the Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI), who stated that the first round of the 2027 presidential election would cost 80 billion BIF. According to the Head of State, this amount should be significantly reduced, given that the election will take place at the village level. He therefore advocates the use of less expensive electoral materials available on the local market.
For Burundi, a country aiming first to become emerging by 2040 and then developed by 2060, this sum could be used to finance sectors that drive development, such as improving the quality of education, he explained.
“These 80 billion BIF would make it possible to equip each commune with a boarding school for students,” he specified, emphasizing that this budget optimization is part of implementing the aforementioned government vision.
President Ndayishimiye also believes that organizing elections using funds from Burundian citizens themselves reflects true independence for Burundi. He therefore asked the CENI to popularize this message among the population so that everyone adopts responsible behavior accordingly.
