April 22nd (AMSP/CGTN) “Thank you. I’m a reporter from CGTN. Since the United States announced it would impose so-called reciprocal tariffs on Chinese exports to the country, Beijing has also taken counter-measures such as imposing sanctions against some American companies. So do you think China-US trade connections could see a decoupling? And how will the US tariff war affect the global economy?,” CGTN’s You Yang asked.

“I don’t think there will be a complete ‘de-coupling’ between China and US trade connections. Because American people need Chinese goods. Because American enterprises need Chinese products. So, American people will find their own ways to buy Chinese goods. I think you must have noticed that many Chinese e-commerce platform apps have attracted great popularity among American people, such as Piduoduo, T-mall and DHgate. Tariff wars are definitely not good for global development, especially for smaller countries. However, in order to negotiate with the Trump administration, one may also bear the risk of Washington’s flip-flopping. The US economy takes up about 15 per cent of the world’s total, and the rest of the nations account for 85 per cent. If that 85 per cent joins together, we may have huge market potential. As a result, the US’s move would finally isolate itself,” replied Prof. Justin Y.Lin, Honorary Dean, School of National Development at Peking University.
