BUJUMBURA, February 14th (ABP) – The National Institute of Social Security (INSS), in partnership with the National Media Council (CNC), organized, on Tuesday, February 11, 2025, in the premises of the Source du Nil hotel in the Bujumbura City (economic capital), a workshop to assess media achievements in promoting social protection in Burundi for the year 2024.

In his opening speech for the workshop, the Director General of the INSS, Mr. Emmanuel Miburo, recalled that the collaboration protocol between the INSS and the CNC dates from 2023 and runs until 2027. For him, the protocol creates an environment for combining efforts to catch up with the delay in the social protection sector.

He deplored the fact that this sector, which is so important for the life of a nation, is not well known. Thus, he indicated, it is in this context that the INSS and the CNC have committed to periodically assessing the actions of the media in terms of social protection in Burundi, to continually strengthen media professionals in this sector and to seek resources from partners working in the programme.

Taking the floor in turn, the Deputy Chairperson of the CNC, Mr. Laurent Kaganda, indicated that the INSS and the CNC are two institutions that are at the service of the nation and that it is with this in mind that this session was designed by the INSS to build the capacities among the media on the aspects of protection, more, on social protection.

The assistant to the Minister of National Solidarity, Social Affairs, Human Rights and Gender, Mrs. Véronique Barindogo, said that there is still work to be done in terms of registration at the INSS because the Burundian population is not at all informed about the law governing social protection, hence some employers neglect this sector, she deplored, noting that the Burundian government has already committed to achieving universal health coverage, setting up a single social registry, strengthening institutions that promote social protection, and popularizing the national social protection strategy.

During the discussions, the participants promised to do everything possible to promote the social protection sector and to ask for support and assistance to achieve this goal.
