GITEGA, Oct 7 (ABP) – A new semi-industrial plant for the production of 100% organic fertilizer has been established. This factory, called CAPA Groupe (Agricultural Center for Soil Amendment Production), is located in the Musinzira neighborhood, under the OTRACO center in the urban center of Gitega, an onsite check by ABP to the plant has disclosed on Wednesday, October 1, 2025.
Nikundana Eric, a young entrepreneur and Director of CAPA Groupe, stated that he is proud of the progress made in just three months since the project’s launch. He explained that the idea of producing organic fertilizer from household waste or market waste to improve soil quality came to him in response to the fertilizer shortages sometimes observed across the country during the planting season, as well as the issue poor soil quality, which affects farmers and reduces their yields. He took the opportunity to thank the Head of State for his consistent support of youth and his encouragement for them to take charge of their future.
After studying electromechanics, Nikundana decided to put his dreams into practice by creating a useful product for Burundians. However, he is seeking support from the government and partners to overcome challenges related to the lack of resources and modern equipment. He noted that they are currently using manual labor for sorting biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste, fermenting the waste for proper decomposition, and for sieving and packaging the final product.
Sinzoyiheba Dominique, a student at the University of Burundi in the Faculty of Agricultural and Biological Engineering (FABI), is involved in the project and explained that the fertilizer produced is rich in nitrogen, phosphorus, and calcium. He added that the fertilizer is 100% organic and can be used for all types of crops. He affirmed that using this fertilizer will improve soil fertility and increase yields. He noted that CAPA Groupe aims to produce enough fertilizer to meet the needs of Burundian farmers and thus help resolve the problem of soil impoverishment. Sinzoyiheba also mentioned that the fertilizer is effective, but it would be even better if it were mixed with the chemical fertilizer produced by FOMI. “Our product is of good quality, even though it is currently in powder form. We would like to acquire modern machines to improve the quality of our product so it can take the form of pellets, like that of FOMI,” he explained.
On the same day, officials from the Burundi Bureau of Standards (BBN) visited the CAPA Groupe plant. They made several observations and promised to issue an operating license if the remarks are addressed and the products meet the required standards.
Nizigiyimana Elias from BBN, after visiting the plant, congratulated the project promoters and encouraged them to continue their efforts to produce quality fertilizers. He urged the managers of CAPA Groupe to ensure that their products comply with standards before being released to the market.
