BUJUMBURA, April 6th (ABP) – The Association of Disabled Girls “L’Espoir” brings together girls living with disabilities to undertake sewing, in order to develop themselves and the country. It began activities in 2014 with the aim of putting an end to begging.
Interviewed on Tuesday, 1 April 2025, near JRR Avenue, in Bujumbura Mayorship, Mrs Evelyne Nibogora, a member of that association, revealed that they sew clothes, loincloth suitcases, dolls to embellish the home, tablecloths, trivets, and so on.
Mrs Nibogora went on to say that their association has opened its doors to people who are not disabled, to help them learn that trade so that they can work together to achieve the country’s vision.
She pointed out that the boys in that association contribute a great deal, because they are quick and can complement the girls and women with disabilities.
She stressed that even though they are disabled, they contribute a great deal to the survival of their households, adding that they help their husbands with family development.
For that reason, Evelyne Nibogora pointed out that a woman’s role in the home remains irreplaceable, even if she lives with a disability.
She took the opportunity to appeal to women and girls living with disabilities to wake up and get involved in development work, so as to help Burundi achieve its vision. She advised women in general not to rely on their husbands for everything, and to wake up and start working.
She urged decision-making bodies to abolish import taxes on mobility-enhancing prostheses, which are prohibitively expensive.
She deplored the fuel shortage, pointing out that that situation is not conducive to their activities, as transport is becoming increasingly difficult, and they cannot walk like others when there is a lack of buses.
