SHOMBO, Feb 16 (ABP) – Residents of the Kiyange, Kigo and Muhororo villages, in Nyarurambi zone, Shombo commune, Gitega province, received support in chemical fertilizers under the PIPARV-B project on Wednesday, February 11, 2026. This initiative aims to support farmers in preparing for cropping season B.

In total, each beneficiary received free of charge 21 kilograms of DAP, 15 kilograms of Bagara-type fertilizer, and 13 kilograms of urea. As for fertilizers from the Fomi plant, usually subsidized by the Burundian government, they are currently being transported to storage facilities in the various zones.

Jean Bosco Nsengiyumva, in charge of environment, agriculture and livestock in Shombo commune, stated that the PIPARV-B project is funded by the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD).

He specified that the distribution was organized by village in order to avoid gatherings of large numbers of people and to ensure equitable access for beneficiaries.

Regarding the fertilizer subsidized by the government, he indicated that all zones already have stocks, even if the quantities are not yet uniform. Large-scale distribution will begin when each zone will have reached a stock capable of storing between 25 and 30 tons.

The beneficiaries welcomed this support. Francine Nitunga, a farmer from Muhororo village, emphasized that the PIPARV-B project has already contributed to adult literacy, the promotion of agroforestry, and the fight against erosion. She also called for the provision of small livestock to enable households to produce organic manure to complement chemical fertilizers.

For his part, Léonard Nimpaye considered that this initiative is in line with the vision of an emerging Burundi in 2040 and a developed country in 2060, stating that the project’s support constitutes an important lever for improving agricultural production and the living conditions of rural populations.
