BUJUMBURA, April 24th (ABP) – The civil registrar and representative of the governor of Bujumbura (western Burundi), Vincent Manirampa, has expressed concern over family disputes. He cited the case of Mugongomanga commune, where individuals write to the minister of the interior requesting special permission to bury a relative on the family land. He made this statement on Tuesday, April 22, 2025, during an interview with ABP.

Following such authorization, conflicts often arise because the deceased is buried on land shared with other family members—land that has not yet been formally divided among brothers.

In the past, applicants would write directly to the Minister of the Interior without routing the request through the provincial governor, and the minister would grant the right. Currently, the letter to the minister must be submitted under the authority of the provincial governor, added the provincial civil registrar for Bujumbura province. He noted that in most cases, the application process is carried out without informing the communal administrator.

If a conflict occurs, our source reported, it is the communal administrator who is called upon to resolve the family conflict, as the persons and family code grants them this authority, Manirampa emphasized.
