GITEGA, January 15th (ABP) – The fall in the prices of food products is observed on several commodities at the central market of Gitega, in the district and province of Gitega (center of the country), a check on Tuesday, January 14, 2025 by ABP has revealed.

People frequenting the market thus breathe a sigh of relief. Marguerite Ndayuwundi, a customer, says she cannot believe it. Christmas and New Year were not celebrated in style, Marguerite Ndayuwundi because of the prices that had risen substantially on the products requested for this purpose, she deplored. She cited, among others, rice from Tanzania, small green peas, meat from small and large livestock, poultry. For traders, the price drop is around 30% to 40% on certain products such as potatoes, yellow beans, onions, small peas, leitis salads, banana bunches, rice from Tanzania and peppers.

Traders say that the price reduction results from the fact that customers no longer flock to the market after the above-mentioned celebrations. Also, they added, the drop resulted from the current harvest for the first growing season 2025.

As for Geneviève Nduwimana, another customer, prices would be reduced significantly if the official price of fuel were saved to avoid the increase in transport costs.

However, other food products have kept the status quo on their prices. These include fruits, cassava, cocoyams, sweet potatoes, cabbages and eggs.
