BUJUMBURA, April 24th (ABP) – The cooperative COOPDEI and the microfinance institution COOPDEAC owe members and depositors from Kinama in Bujumbura Mayorship (west of Burundi) and from Muyira in Bujumbura province (west of the country) a total amount slightly exceeding 49 billion BIF, with over 2 billion BIF owed to depositors in Muyira alone.
This was reported by Angelo Ntakarutimana, a member of the debt recovery commission, during a meeting aimed at calming the Muyira people, which was held by the governor of Bujumbura province, Désiré Nsengiyumva.
Ntakarutimana informed them that the commission is actively working and assured that all the recovered funds, which are part of the debts owed by these microfinances, will be returned to the depositors, although no deadline was given.
The governor of Bujumbura called on the affected individuals to remain calm when filing their complaints, urging them not to act against the law. This was at a time when they were considering staging a protest. Governor Nsengiyumva delivered reassuring messages, which helped calm the situation, while promising to closely monitor the progress.
The people appreciated these reassuring messages and requested to be kept informed whenever necessary, ensuring that both small and large depositors receive their money.
