RUTANA, March 11 (ABP) – The head of Rutana zone, Sophie Nizigiyimana, calls on the population to fight against the practice of cohabitation, stating that it constitutes an obstacle to the development of households and families. She made this statement during an interview granted to the Burundi Press Agency (ABP) on Friday, March 6, 2026.

Sophie Nizigiyimana indicated that this behavior is increasingly observed in the town of Rutana, especially among some men who come there looking for work. According to Mrs. Nizigiyimana, some of them maintain relationships with women who are already in households. This causes family conflicts and disrupts the balance of families.

For her, this practice has several negative consequences within society. She notably mentions the disintegration of certain households, the increase in unplanned births, as well as the loss of certain cultural values that characterize Burundian society.

Mrs. Nizigiyimana invited the population, particularly men who come to work in the urban center of Rutana, to avoid this behavior and to respect family values. She also urged them to promote relationships based on respect for the law and good morals.

The fight against this phenomenon requires the involvement of everyone, notably parents, administrative authorities and religious leaders, in order to strengthen moral education and the promotion of family values.
