Assessment of achievements and development prospects

MATONGO, Feb 17 (ABP) – The Speaker of the National Assembly of Burundi, Daniel Gelase Ndabirabe, joined residents of Matongo commune in Butanyerera province (north) this Sunday for a meeting bringing together natives of the commune to assess semiannual achievements and set future prospects. The activities began with a visit to the construction site of the future communal office, a four-story building.

Presenting the overall situation of the commune, the administrator of Matongo, Janvière Kanyana, indicated that that meeting represents an important step in good governance.

Regarding the semiannual achievements, she mentioned the pooling of arable land for block farming, the planting of avocado trees and the distribution of banana seedlings, the construction and rehabilitation of schools as well as the distribution of textbooks, the distribution of mosquito nets and support to the health sector, the construction of water supply systems and the promotion of solar energy, the rehabilitation of roads, the construction of bridges and the establishment of a digital platform, among many other projects of public interest.

As for future projects, she indicated that the communal administration plans to strengthen agricultural cooperatives, encourage collective work and secure land tenure to facilitate access to credit, increase agricultural production through selected seeds and organic fertilizers, maintain roads connecting the villages, establish markets for selling harvests and expand the tax base, promote income-generating activities for women and youth, and promote hygiene, sanitation and access to drinking water, among others.

In his remarks, the Speaker of the National Assembly and native of Matongo, Ndabirabe, praised the progress already achieved and urged the population to strengthen income-generating initiatives.

He recommended the active involvement of women and youth in agriculture and livestock farming, joining cooperatives to increase production, registering land and obtaining land titles to facilitate access to bank credit, developing unused land and ensuring effective supervision of local cooperatives and enterprises.

He also invited the residents of Matongo in particular and Burundians in general to promote unity, love of the homeland and the primacy of the general interest in order to accelerate both local and overall development.
