CANKUZO, Feb 24 (ABP) – Prime Minister Nestor Ntahontuye announced, during a meeting to present the achievements of Buhumuza province and to exchange New Year wishes for 2026, held on Saturday, February 21, 2026, the government’s commitment to supporting the development of provinces and communes.
The Prime Minister, a native of Buhumuza province, congratulated the province on the progress made in development and stated that the government of Burundi will spare no effort in supporting the development of local entities. He thus announced the government’s contribution of 1.5 billion BIF to the construction project of the provincial office of Buhumuza, as well as an envelope of 200 million BIF per commune across the country for the development of green spaces.
However, Mr. Ntahontuye called on administrative authorities to grant state-owned land, including mountainous areas, to businesspeople so that they may implement self-development projects as part of the implementation of the country’s 2040-2060 vision.
According to Nestor Ntahontuye, beekeeping and tree-planting development projects are well suited to mountainous areas. This would be a good opportunity to generate benefits from the environment instead of destroying it, he said.
The governor of the province, Mrs. Denise Ndaruhekere, for her part listed the major achievements. Regarding the construction of the provincial office, out of a total budget of more than 900 million BIF, 600 million BIF have already been used. She also highlighted the promotion of coffee growing, avocado trees, and other agroforestry plants. The promotion of beekeeping, the maintenance of contour lines, and the promotion of cleanliness are also among the ongoing projects.
Speaking about the challenges, Mrs. Ndaruhekere noted, among others, the lack of drinking water in the headquarters of the former provinces that make up Buhumuza, delays in road paving works in Cankuzo, alcoholism, undeveloped marshlands, and climate hazards.
Among the participants’ interventions, it was emphasized that development-related programs must be implemented in synergy, without exception, for the effective implementation of the country’s 2040-2060 vision. Mgr Blaise Nzeyimana, Catholic Bishop of the diocese of Ruyigi, advocated in this regard for rigorous monitoring of development work on the ground in order to encourage everyone’s involvement in this vision.
