MUKAZA, April 8 (ABP) – The Burundian Head of State, Evariste Ndayishimiye, held on Monday, April 6, 2026, at City Hall, a moralization session for administrative authorities from the communes of Mukaza, Ntahangwa and Mugere in Bujumbura province, focusing on hygiene and mindset change, in order to strengthen cleanliness in the economic capital.
This session aimed to raise awareness among grassroots administrative officials for exemplary leadership in neighborhood sanitation, beautification, and mobilizing the population against unsanitary conditions.
President Ndayishimiye emphasized the need to organize sanitation activities in a structured manner: holding meetings, establishing an action schedule, evaluating achieved results, and providing each neighborhood with a clear vision, which forms the foundation of all development.
The President of Burundi also commended communal administrators for the efforts already made in terms of cleanliness, while inviting them to strengthen coordination through regular meetings to establish an action plan tailored to each locality. The highest authority also took this opportunity to express condolences to families affected by the disaster of March 31, 2026, wishing a speedy recovery to the injured, before congratulating the residents of Bujumbura for respecting authorities’ instructions and participating in community work. During this meeting, he recalled that leaders must consult the people they oversee, as these form the basis of their actions. He also urged them to demonstrate vigilance and responsibility in all their initiatives.
He asked authorities to raise awareness among the people about maintaining cleanliness in workplaces and adopting proper dress in public spaces.
Regarding markets in Bujumbura province, the Burundian leader asked traders to clean the surroundings of their workplaces. He concluded by stressing that the meeting was an opportunity to realign officials, ensuring a shared understanding of objectives, recalling the slogan: “Together, everything is possible.”

Earlier, the governor of Bujumbura province, Aloys Ndayikengurukiye, had thanked the president of Burundi for the opportunity given to local officials to discuss national life.
He praised the security prevailing in the province as well as the population’s commitment to development activities. Efforts are underway in the areas of hygiene and sanitation, he indicated. After visiting several neighborhoods, the governor of Bujumbura province noted that many residents had responded to the call for cleanliness.
However, he urged those who have not yet committed to do so, while warning that sanctions could be applied to those who ignore the instructions.
He also called on officials to mobilize collectively to eradicate the disease cholera, which has recently reappeared in the city.
Addressing the health situation, Governor Ndayikengurukiye reported a resurgence of cholera, with cases already being treated at Prince Louis Rwagasore Hospital and Rubirizi Hospital, a situation that reinforces the urgency of a general mobilization in favor of hygiene.
