NGOZI, November 7th (ABP) – Mr Désiré Nkurunziza, a journalist in Ngozi province, works for Agora T.V, an online medium.  In addition to his work, he enjoys contributing to agricultural production. In the 2024 C growing season, Désiré Nkurunziza devoted himself to growing tomatoes. His fields are located on the Muremera hill, in the commune of Mwumba, and cover around one hectare.

He is very satisfied with that activity.  “I started growing tomatoes in 2022. In the beginning, I experienced difficulties due to a lack of experience. I even made some losses. But I never gave up.

“I tried again in 2023, and my production was relatively good. That year, my production is excellent. He expects to be able to harvest at least 12 baskets of fresh tomatoes every two weeks.

Each basket costs him 30,000 BIF. He expects to be able to harvest for two months.

Asked whether he’ll be able to get his money back and make a profit, he says he’s made a lot of money that year. I haven’t finished harvesting yet,” he says,” but I’ve already made a profit if I take into account receipts and capital expenditure.

The only problem is the market for the high production. In his view, the government and private operators could set up a tomato concentrate processing plant, since production in the region remains very high.

He urges other journalists to invest in agriculture:

“In addition to being an activity that can support and supplement household income, it’s also a way of contributing to the country’s development in its 2040-2060 vision.
