BUJUMBURA, January 23rd (ABP) – The public trash cans installed in certain places of large gatherings for the collection of waste in the Bujumbura City are worn-out, and some of them need to be replaced, a check on Tuesday, January 21, 2025 has revealed.
In some places of the city, public trash cans are worn-out, while others are holed, as is the case in front of the bus parking lot in the north of the capital and in the surrounding area, where passengers throw their waste a few meters from the public trash cans. The situation is like that, while the municipal authority installed those trash cans to prevent city dwellers from throwing their waste on the ground.
In addition, the trash cans are not emptied regularly, which leads to overflows. Waste is also scattered on the ground, giving off an unpleasant odor when passing by, and can pollute the environment, especially in the case of already used trash cans. This situation occurs when these trash cans are not intended to receive household waste, but rather packaging or leftovers from passers-by’s consumption.
On this issue, the people met on the ground ask the managers of the hygiene service and the local administration in Bujumbura City to raise awareness among the people on the proper use of those trash cans and to replace those that are perforated with other ones that are in good condition, in order to maintain cleanliness in the city.
It is worth noting that those trash cans were installed in order to improve sanitation in Bujumbura City, but if measures are not taken, they risk becoming a source of environmental pollution.
