CENI has presented the report on the progress of the 2025 election process and the next steps

BUJUMBURA, January 21st (ABP) – The Independent National Election Commission (CENI) brought together last Friday the election partners and the political parties, in order to present the report on the progress of the 2025 election process as well as the next steps.

During the meeting, the chairman of the commission, Prosper Ntahorwamiye indicated that in November 2024, the CENI asked the political parties, coalitions and independents to submit the logos that will appear on the ballot papers and that will be used during propaganda. Thus 20 political parties, one coalition and 12 independents presented the logos.

Mr. Ntahorwamiye further recalled that the total number of registered voters inside and outside the country is 6,022,268.

Concerning the files of candidates for the position of communal councilors and deputies submitted to the CEPI, Prosper Ntahorwamiye announced that the lists are posted on the CEPI offices.

He indicated that after analysis in accordance with the election code, the files of candidates for the position of communal councilors and deputies meeting the requirements were approved. Those who did not appreciate the decision of the CEPI, he revealed, were entitled to submit their grievances to the CENI for communal councilors and to the constitutional court for candidate deputies.

Prosper Ntahorwamiye showcased simulations of the ballot papers planned for use in the 2025 elections.

Concerning the activities planned for the next stages, Mr. Ntahorwamiye indicated that the lists of voters will soon be posted. Thus, the correction of errors appearing on them will be made.

He also indicated that after the posting of the final lists of voters, voter cards will be distributed in 4246 places that hosted the registrations on the roll. He called on Burundians to consult those lists once posted and to report the errors found to correct them. Those who, in the meantime, have moved, will be re-registered at their current residence, he specified.

Mr. Ntahorwamiye also called on the leaders of political parties, coalitions and independents to raise awareness among their followers and consult the lists. Regarding those who want to supervise elections, Mr. Ntahorwamiye announced that they must present themselves to the CENI to benefit from accreditation.

It is worthy to note that the elections of communal councilors and deputies are scheduled for June 5, 2025 according to the election calendar.
