Rabbit farmers called upon to respect hygiene rules in hutches to combat rabbit diseases

BUJUMBURA, January 16th (ABP) – Rabbits are domestic animals that reproduce quickly but often fall ill if they are not taken care of cleanly. This was announced by veterinary technician Aimable Kwizera, during an interview with a check by ABP on Tuesday, January 14, 2025, in the Carama district, Kinama County, Ntahangwa district in Bujumbura City.

According to him, rabbit diseases are viral, bacterial or parasitic. There are several types of diseases such as coccidiosis, ear mites, coryza, myxomatosis and, finally, cannibalism.

Regarding the symptoms displayed by sick rabbits, he highlighted among others, loss of appetite, noticeable aches in the corners of their enclosure, drooping ears, and also display weight loss. Regarding treatment, Mr. Kwizera mentioned some medicines such as emporium for coccidiosis, some antibiotics such as penicillin for abscesses. He also advised rabbit farmers not to group several rabbits to combat cannibalism.

He also called on them especially to observe hygiene in the hutches every day to combat rabbit diseases and to vaccinate and sanitize them every two months to kill bacteria and fungi.
