BUJUMBURA, December 13th (ABP) – The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Development Cooperation, Albert Shingiro, received his counterpart from the Republic of Algeria, Ahmed Attaf, in Bujumbura on Thursday December 12, 2024, for a working session during which they exchanged views on various subjects of cooperation between the two friendly countries.
Shingiro also exchanged gifts with his Algerian counterpart, a symbolic sign of the good friendly relations existing between Burundi and Algeria.
On the sidelines of the working session, Inès Sonia Niyubahwe, Director of Communications and Spokesperson for the Ministry in charge of development cooperation, told the press that the two diplomats had generally agreed to strengthen cooperation between the two countries in the interests of their respective peoples.
Recalling that Algeria and Burundi have strengthened cooperation in the sectors of education, vocational training, health, agriculture and defense, Niyubahwe pointed out that the two ministers had promised to strengthen them further and explore other ways of diversifying cooperation, especially in the areas of trade exchanges, technology transfer, investment and many others.
Given that Algeria and Burundi held the sixth edition of the joint commission in 2009, the two foreign ministers promised to organize the seventh edition of the joint cooperation commission as soon as possible, in early 2025, she added. She pointed out that that joint cooperation commission would give new impetus to cooperation, while the identification of areas of cooperation would be carried out jointly by the Burundian and Algerian sides, and that the Algerian side was willing to consider any proposals put forward by the Burundian side.
Finally, the two diplomats exchanged views on other global, regional and continental issues, pledging mutual support in international forums and organizations.
Algeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and National Community Abroad, Ahmed Attaf, has been on an official visit to Burundi since December 11, 2024.
