RUMONGE, December 13th (ABP) – The project to rehabilitate the port of Rumonge and build a cross-border market will bring benefits to the development of the Rumonge commune in particular and the country in general. That was confirmed on Wednesday, December 11, 2024, by members of a World Bank delegation on a field visit to see the state of play in the execution of the project.

The delegation was welcomed by the Rumonge provincial governor’s advisor in charge of development and the Rumonge commune administrator, Augustin Minani.

After paying a visit to the Kanyenkoko site, the site where the cross-border market will be built, and the port of Rumonge, the members of the delegation indicated that the port infrastructures to be built there will improve the appearance of the urban town of Rumonge, which will thus attract tourists.

The people will also benefit from employment thanks to the multiple activities that will be carried out there, and merchants will also find a market for their building materials, the same delegation added.

The Rumonge commune administrator thanked the Burundian government and the World Bank for having chosen Rumonge commune as a host area for all those major projects, important for the life of the commune in particular and the country in general. He took the same opportunity to ask the delegation to include as ancillary works to the project, the rehabilitation of various tracks in the town of Rumonge, which are currently in poor condition.

He also welcomed the project to build a large market, since, in his view, the urban town of Rumonge is populated by inhabitants, many of whom are traders.

Although the rising waters of Lake Tanganyika have caused some of the project’s studies to be revised, the World Bank delegation reassured the population that work will start in the second quarter of next year.
