BEIJING, September 23rd (AMSP/CGTN) – – Global water experts have gathered in Beijing to mark the 40th year of the establishment of the International Training Center on Erosion and Sediment.

The Center was jointly established by China and UNESCO in 1984. China is among the countries that suffer from serious soil erosion. Official data from the ministry of water resources shows that the area of soil erosion in China has been decreasing, thanks to various conservation efforts. Since 2012, more than 470 thousand square kilometers of soil erosion have been controlled nationwide. The erosion has been reduced by an average of 1-point-6 billion metric tons per year during the same period.

During the meeting, Li Liangsheng, China’s Vice Minister of Water Resources has pointed out that the Ministry of Water Resources will, as always, honor its commitments and provide comprehensive support and guidance to IRTCES. “We also look forward to more guidance and assistance from UNESCO in the center’s development, as well as continued scientific research, information exchange, and technical cooperation among countries in the fields of sediment and soil erosion,” he said.
