BUBANZA/MPANDA, August 6 (ABP) – A total of 1,500 hectares of arable land have been pooled together by their owners for the 2025 C growing season in the communes of Bubanza and Mpanda, with the aim of increasing agricultural production, according to Mr. Sylvestre Ndayishimiye, head of the Provincial Office of Environment, Agriculture and Livestock (BPEAE).

These lands are located in the Imbo plain, mainly in the areas of Gihanga and Mpanda and in the natural Mugamba region, particularly in the marshlands of Musigati and Rugazi.

Landowners have chosen to grow maize on 1,200 out of the 1,500 hectares, 40 tons of selected hybrid maize seeds have been made available to farmers in both communes, and planting is currently underway. The expected yield is at least three tons per hectare.

Pooling agricultural land makes it easier to provide support to farmers and combat plant diseases. It also fosters the sharing of experiences between landowners, the same source said.

The BPEAE director has encouraged these farmers to practice irrigation by taking advantage of nearby water sources; He advised them to dig pits within the fields to retain irrigation water.

Ndayishimiye also urged them to use “Imbura”-type chemical fertilizers during planting and to follow the guidance of agricultural technicians from their respective localities.
